Punjab Launches Universal Health Card Scheme, Promising ₹10 Lakh Cashless Treatment for All Families

Punjablocalnews

In a landmark move to revolutionize public healthcare, the Punjab government has officially launched its ambitious universal health insurance scheme. Under this initiative, every family in the state will be eligible for cashless medical treatment up to ₹10 lakh annually through a new ‘CM Health Card’. The registration process for this historic scheme began last week in the Tarn Taran and Barnala districts and is set to expand across the entire state in the coming weeks.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that this scheme is designed to ensure that no citizen of Punjab has to worry about the financial burden of medical emergencies. “Our goal is to provide quality and accessible healthcare to everyone, from major surgeries to critical treatments,” the Chief Minister stated. “This health card is a guarantee from our government that your health is our priority.”

Key Features of the Universal Health Card Scheme
This comprehensive scheme aims to cover the entire population of Punjab, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country. Here are the main highlights:

Universal Coverage: Unlike previous schemes that were often limited by income or professional criteria, this health card will be available to every family residing in Punjab.

₹10 Lakh Cashless Treatment: Each registered family will receive a health cover of ₹10 lakh per year, which can be used for a wide range of medical procedures and hospitalizations.

Wide Network of Hospitals: The scheme includes all government hospitals and has already empanelled over 500 private hospitals. The government plans to expand this network to over 1,000 private facilities soon.

Simple Registration Process: Residents can register for the card at special camps being set up across districts using their Aadhaar card or Voter ID. The process is designed to be quick and user-friendly.

How Will It Impact the Common Citizen?
This scheme is a game-changer for the residents of Punjab. Previously, many families would either delay critical treatments or fall into debt due to exorbitant hospital bills. With the CM Health Card, citizens can now walk into any empanelled hospital and receive necessary medical care without any upfront payment.

Kuldeep Singh, a farmer from Barnala who was among the first to register, expressed his relief. “This is a huge weight off our shoulders. We always live in fear of a medical emergency wiping out our savings. This card gives us a sense of security that our families will be taken care of.”

Strengthening Punjab’s Healthcare Infrastructure
Alongside this insurance scheme, the government is also focusing on upgrading the healthcare infrastructure. This includes scaling up the number of Aam Aadmi Clinics to 1,000 and ensuring the complete availability of medicines at these centers.

Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh recently highlighted the government’s commitment to medical professionals, announcing a new policy to honor 60 doctors annually for their outstanding service. “By boosting the morale of our doctors and providing financial security to our citizens, we are creating a robust and compassionate healthcare ecosystem in Punjab,” he said.

The rollout of the Universal Health Card is being closely monitored to ensure a smooth implementation. It marks a significant step towards making quality healthcare a right, not a privilege, for the people of Punjab.
